Sounds like you want to monitor the traffic (in reals time) istead of
accounting it (for later analysis).
If you want to know what the current throughput of an interface is tools
like 'iptraf' or 'netwatch' my fit. They are no accounting tools but
great for monitoring.
Also 'sar' and 'dstat -N eth0' come to my mind
