Netcomm NB1400 adsl modem

greetings.
I recently upgraded from 56k dialup to an adsl connection.
I'm using a Netcomm NB1400 ethernet ADSL modem/router and I'm
wondering if anyone can help me with a few questions.
I'm concerned about what shows up when I do a remote port-scan
of the modem with nmap: 139/netbios-ssn,
10000/snet-sensor-mgmt,
10005/stel, and 10082/amandaidx - all come up as "open".
Running a few of the web-based scans around the net I'm seeing
that the modem shows it's unopen ports as "closed".
Two things I'd like to do - close the open ports, and have the
modem DROP outside connection attempts rather than REJECT them.

I imagine this to be a fairly generic adsl modem/router
question
so maybe someone can point me to a way to change these settings

in my modem.
The modem is not exactly thoroughly documented - there are many
commands that fail to make it into the manuals, and of the
commands that I've figured out through trial and google
searches, there's nothing to indicate the ability to close
ports off and change the modem's defaults for connection
attempts.
I'm nervous - I don't trust the modem to take care of _itself_
from attacks. Inside, I'm firewalled, and this is ok, but I'm
concerned that the security of the modem itself will be
compromised.
Would there be a security gain by port forwarding _everything_
and trusting the internal linux firewall to handle everything?
would there be much of a performance tradeoff with this
approach?

very grateful for any suggestions.
cheers
Dennis.
