i don't know that much about NIS, but i don't think it is a good idea to
put NIS on your firewall. The job of a firewall is to protect your
network, if someone breaches your firewall he/she has direct access
to all your users's account information that is kept there. 

Use a seperate box for NIS. And be very carefull about traffic from
your firewall to the NIS-box, 'cause there is no need for it, or is
there?
