It sounds like you are trying this from a Win program.  Try it from
a Command Prompt window, and then see what happens.

Sounds like your linux box's name is not in the XP box's 
C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC\HOSTS file.

A routing problem?  Is your default gateway set?
