My 2 cents worth is that if this is a home network, and if this is an ordinary
dialup account that is not left connected 24/7, then telnet is secure enough
within your LAN and is one less thing you have to deal with.

If, on the other hand,  you share your LAN with potential practical jokers, your
connection is something other than a standard dialup on a POTS line, then
consider ssh.
