no go with wd.o driver on Debian Potato

Hi.

Another newbie question.  I'm "upsizing" from LRP boot floppy (based on
slink and 2.2.16 kern) to Debian Potato.

The wd.o driver for my Western Digital / SMC ISA cards fails to find the
cards.  The LRP driver works great on my system...

I have found a few references to similar problem on Potato.. but no fix yet.
Can someone help me navigate what I need to do to get this resolved?
