FTP server on a masqued net

I'm trying to make visible on the pulic net an ftp server that resides
behind a masquerading box (Debian 2.1 kernel 2.0.36). I read the IP
Masquerading HOWTO and I understand that it is only possible with kernel
2.0.x patched with IPPORTFW (subs-patch-1.37.gz) and portfw-ftp-patch
(remeber the ftp has ip addresses on his control connection)...
what about 2.2.x kernels? I tried to use IPPORTFW but I'm not lucky: I see
the packtes trying to come back (ipfwadm -lM on the firewall itself) but
they never leave the machine.

Does anyone have a working setup on this? Reading the Ipchains HOWTO I
found a sentence "with kernel 2.0.36 ipportfw doesnt work because the
patch is old" ... but the patch on the site is not old!

What about ipfilter?

I need some delucidations that I'm not able to find on documetation

Please any help is apreciated
