I'm not a big fan of SSL.  It requires each Internet application to be
patched.  IMHO, a better approach is to push encryption/authentication
down to the packet level.  One possible tool for this is skip which
has a linux port and is released under GPL:

In my copious free time I plan on packaging this for Debian.
