Ok did the second stage install with chroot and then after putting the rootfs and booting I get new errors:

It looks like the kernel is older. Got a fresh kernel out from kernel.org, built uImage. Boots perfectly now. Maybe doing a squeeze rootfs for the older kernel might help.
