designing hardware to run emdebian

Dangerous Prototypes (dangerousprototypes.com) is discussing what the
next version of their web platform should have in their forum. What
is more-or-less the minimal hardware needed to run emdebian? Is there
a good, cheap, available in low quantity processor that could do the
job and not need many external components?

The current version uses a dspic processor and has ethernet, usb
slave, and microSD interfaces and a few available io pins. I think a
much more capable version could be done for not much over the current
$40 price.

Dangerous Prototypes has release all of their code under GPL or
CC-BY-SA, and has been having problems with the restrictivly licenced
drivers they use. Their hardware designs are available free, and they
don't appear to have a large markup on their kits and assembled units.

With Microsoft, failure is not an option. It is a standard feature.
