Try checking your shell with the following:

$ echo

$ echo test
test
$ sh -c 'echo test;'
test
$ sh -c 'set -e; echo test;'
test
$ sh -c 'set -e; echo "test";'
test
$ bash -c 'set -e; echo "test";'
test

I can't see any other reason - yet 'Undefined subroutine' is more of a
Perl error.

Something appears very broken in your configuration.
