Hello Maverick,

 You need to compile a patched binutils.
 Why can't you use precompiled packages (that would help us to fix
any problem, if there is one)? Did you try to add to your sources
list...

deb http://www.emdebian.org/debian/ testing main

 and search desired packages?

 For mipsel you could also try Thiemo's precompiled packages at:
http://people.debian.org/~ths/toolchain/cross-2006-09-18/etch-mipsel-cross/
