I agree that there are many solutions to this problem. Your solution had
not worked for me since I couldn't build the current toolchain (I
haven't had time to report that yet).

So, my problem is how to disable gccross. But regarding the bug, there
is, as stated before, room for improvement:

* Conflict with older toolchains.

* Show the user that gccross is used.

* Show the user the exact rewritten command line.

E.g., libtool works this way.

We could probably merge this bug with 374778.
