The current showstopper is the need of dpkg-cross update. See [1].
I currently think that changing arch handling (item 3 in [1]) should be 
postponed for better times, but items 1 and 2 should be do ASAP.
Still hoping to find a free evening ... :(
If someone will post a patch, it would probably unlock the situation.

Anyway, updating binutils cross patch is not locked by dpkg-cross, so if 
you can update, please do. Updating gcc cross patches require updated 
dpkg-cross.

AFAIK, stag is a set of scripts to build 'emdebian versions' of debian 
packages; I don't know much about it. Better to ask at 
debian-embedded@lists.debian.org; I'm CCing this message there.

I think that on debian x86 or amd64 host, native gcc packages can be used 
directly to compile for 486 (-mcpu=486 -march=486)?
