You may try pre-build debs for cross toolchain, currently available at
http://zigzag.lvk.cs.msu.su/~nikita/debian/

Those packages are built from source debian gcc and binutils packages,
minimally patched to produce tools for cross targets. So they should be as
stable as debian native toolchains.

However, toolchain packages produced with toolchain-source method (i.e.
yours) are almost the same; probably there is no reason not to use them.
