task-cross-* dpkg errors?

I am trying to install the task-cross packages and they failed. The other problem is that the package database appears to be messed up and I can not install anything. How do you fix this? I am new to Debian. All the obvious things like "apt-get -f -m remove task-cross-arm" fail.

TIA
