Good catch! Thanks a lot.
Mine was a simple hack to build the package but never meant to be the
final solution.

I've applied your patch to m-f-el package [1] but latest upload of Emacs
28 is in trouble these days and the build is failing at the moment.
Gonna test it again asap.
