Do you know Wanderlust (http://www.gohome.org/wl/)?

I feel that switching from Mew to Wanderlust is easier than
switching from Mew to Gnus.  Wanderlust has these features:

  - Mew-like key-bind and mark handling.
  - Folder Mode shows the list of subscribed folders.
  - Manages unread messages.
  - Supports IMAP4rev1, NNTP, POP (POP3/APOP), MH and Maildir format.
