if you just want to occasionally edit files as root with emacs, you
could install tramp. Then you just open (for instance)
/[suu/root@localhost]/etc/hosts
in your normal-user emacs and it'll do all it needs to.
(note that you'll need uuencode / uudecode around for the "suu" method
to work. there's also the "su" method that uses sudo, if you happen
to use sudo).
