The error message:
ERROR: Could not get I/O privileges (Operation not permitted).

to me and #flashrom is not misleading at all.
I don't think upstream wants to change something here. If you disagree,
we can forward it to the bug tracking of flashrom.

I'm sure strace flashrom yourparameters would give you details, what I/Oports

it wants to access, but your setup refuses it access to.
