AFAICT it has been added (years ago) to ensure that sound will work. 
I've tested if sound works for the Debian Edu supported DEs (KDE, MATE, 
Xfce, LXDE, GNOME) in Stretch: it does. As kmod is already pulled in, no 
replacement is needed, I guess.
