I managed to figure out the problem.  The cause was the "BatchMode
yes" entry in ~/.ssh/config, making sure ssh did not ask to accept the
new key.  I had removed the incorrect key from ~/.ssh/known_hosts, but
ssh refused to add the new one until I commented out the BatchMode
value in ~/.ssh/config.
