i didn't use the original poppl laudatio condensed since it is a
commercial non-free font.
i obtained a free version of that font but didn't use it in the end. the
edu was done manually.

good observation, indeed - you are perfectly right..

the kerning within the original debian-logo is not exactly a designers
dream and i must admit that in a weak moment i was tempted to alter it
but chose not to mess with a solid brand. the kerning of the edu on the
other hand was manually set and the word was deliberately chosen to be
so close to the n. the logo is not supposed to be used monocolored but
always with either a lighter coloured debian or a lighter coloured edu
(depending on the background) this causes an effect of a certain
distance between the two words. one word always stands out. by bringing
them closer together in x this effect is compensated to a certain
degree. hence the spacial proximity...
