[Bug 1419] New: PXE installation fail often because of bug in Squid affecting APT

http://bugs.skolelinux.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1419

Summary: PXE installation fail often because of bug in Squid
                    affecting APT
           Product: Skolelinux
           Version: lenny-alpha3
          Platform: All
        OS/Version: Linux
            Status: NEW
          Severity: major
          Priority: P2
         Component: System distrubution
        AssignedTo: debian-edu@lists.debian.org
        ReportedBy: pere@hungry.com

Often then I do a PXE installation using the Squid proxy on the main
server, the installation fail with messages about "Hash Sum mismatch"
from apt. I search a bit around, and discovered that this might be
caused by a bug in the handling of If-Modified-Since in Squid, see
<URL: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=499379 >.

This problem will generate a lot of support requrest from Debian Edu users and
make the PXE installation via Squid unreliable and perhaps even useless.

My last PXE install failed during LTSP generation, making it possible
for me to verify that the fix for bug #1412 did work.

This issue is reported upstream at <URL:
http://bugs.squid-cache.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2624 >, and a patch for version
3.0, while we use version 2.7 in Lenny. I tried to apply the patch to version
2.7, but the source file is not there and the source code is completely
different. I was unable to figure out how to fix this for version 2.7.

I have no idea if there is some workaround for this issue, but a crude
workaround is to disable the use of Squid when installing via the net. I
assume the problem will affect both PXE installs and netinst installs using the
Squid proxy.
