cause found:

/etc/resolv.conf has modus 0600.
since nslcd runs as an unpriviledged user, dns lookups fail for nslcd, while
working for root.

`chmod 0644 /etc/resolv.conf` did the trick and I got a fully functional
diskless workstation. :D
