install printers on lenny?

Dear All,
My annual back to school routine seems to involve me discovering at the 
11th hour that I can't get printers working. First Sarge, then Etch and 
now Lenny. Each one a different issue of course.

Normally (if that exists), when you connect a usb printer to a computer, 
then you go to localhost:631 or use the KDE printer tool, then the 
printer should show up when you want to install it, right? Well on Lenny 
it doesn't!
Neither on ltspservers nor workstations. These printers all worked with 
etch.

Does anyone have printing working on lenny? Google isn't helping me much.

Of course its 10:00pm, I'm the last one in school, and kids start in the 
morning.
