Which approaches did you try that failed? Not that I want to help debug
your wrong approaches, but elaborating might help others reading this
mail to avoid repeating the same mistakes. :-)
OpenOffice.org 2.3.x is available at http://backports.org/ it seems.
You can mix a stable Debian system (or Debian-Edu) with there.
But beware that Debian is only seriously tested with Debian itself.
Mixing with outside packages raise the risk of problems - now or when
you later upgrade the system.
But if you must, I'd say that mixing Debian stable with (least possible)
packages from backports.org is the most robust approach. Much better
than hunting down and manually installing individual packages from other
sources, or switching to other distributions.
