http://bugs.skolelinux.no/show_bug.cgi?id=1269

Summary: Strange behaviour of Samba while adding machines
           Product: Skolelinux
           Version: etch-release-3.0r0
          Platform: All
               URL: http://www.skolelinux.de/pipermail/user/2007-
                    October/007410.html
        OS/Version: other
            Status: NEW
          Severity: normal
          Priority: P2
         Component: samba
        AssignedTo: debian-edu@lists.debian.org
        ReportedBy: rgx@gmx.de

This bug summarizes a report made by Lars W. (cf. URL).
Lars describes on a German Wiki page [1] some problems joining windows
machines. The reason for problems could be found in nscd: Joining does work
whenever nscd is down. Not only according to the howto at [2], but also as used
from Windows clients (system settings/machine name /change etc.)

They assume that nscd caches the reply of hostname lookup
while /etc/samba/smbaddclient.pl is run; then the negative reply is reused for
the next query. This gives the impression that the account wasn't created
however it does exist in LDAP.
What we are doing now: Stop NSCD while adding clients - but this is a
workaround that should be solved more general.

Furthermore, we observed another absurdity: Several (but not all!) of our
Skolelinux servers lack the group "machines". It is possible to create those
groups using LWAT, but it would be nice to know how the group "machines"
disappears."
