how about:
- /usr/share/debian-edu/network-wide/ as the directory (or a subdirectory on
  one of the current NFS mounts?)
- kde-school-specific-settings (to long?) or kde-schoolconf

desktop-profiles knows about any profiles mentioned in a .listing file 
in /etc/desktop-profiles, any listing files from packages should be called 
<package name>.listing or <package_name>_<something>.listing file, 
-> so for extra profiles just drop a .listing file with info about it in that 
dir (the kommander tool uses a single custom.listing by default for new 
profiles)
