for future reference and googlers alike. 

the problem was that on the initial install eth1 was not detected, becouse of a
unsupported chipset.  
We added a nic and thin clients booted normaly. Problem was that there was not
created a key for 192.168.0.254 in /etc/ssh_known_hosts, and we would get the
host key verification failed. a reinstalled with the nic in fixed the issue.

most likely petter's suggestion of /usr/sbin/ltsp-update-sshkeys would have also
fixed the issue.
