/etc/init.d/mountvirtfs is responsible for setting up /dev/pts

So it should work without changes in /etc/fstab

Which CD was this, which Language did you install, could you add the
/var/log/base-config.log and /var/log/debian-installer/* as attachment

Did you check the md5 of the CD. 

I cant reproduce this on daily built, using netboot install and 2.4-kernel, I'll
try with a CD_based install and 2.6-kernel
