I've done a bit more testing:
I installed standalone using 2.4 kernel
I upgraded to 2.6.8 that comes with Sarge, and the problem arises

To solve the problem, I stopped mounting of devfsd, by setting 
 MOUNT=no
in /etc/devfault/devfsd

I'm not sure if this would happen on pure debian, since pure debian doesn't
install devfsd by default. 
I thought we had disabled devfsd on the Sarge build, but obviously not :(
