I guess this is a bug of devfsd not working on newer kernels than 2.6.8 (or was
it 2.6.10) ? 

Try to install udev, and see if that helps. 
Try to run /etc/init.d/mountvirtfs, maybe even by using 
"bash -x /etc/init.d/mountvirtfs start" and see where it fails. 

Was it working when you used 2.6.8-kernel ? 

I think this is a bug to be reported upstream debian, and not for
debian-edu/skolelinux
