Education is usually the largest public enterprise in every western
country today. If every news flash or document should be published
from a master language, this would be both overwhelming, and not
always relevant for other countries. It will also be a bottleneck for
contributors that are not so fluent in other languages than their own.
So we wanted a bottom up approach on most of the stuff, and some top
down approach when English is the work language. I've already got
complaints that there is not enough information on Norwegian, so will
fix that. Then we translate our work to English that has a more
general value for everyone. It's important that the website contains
localised information for the teachers. This issue cant be
underestimated, and is one of the reasons there is around 200
Skolelinux-installations in Norway, and not so many
Linux-installations at all in Sweden or Denmark ....
It's more important that people contribute, than scare teachers away
with elite questions that enforces English as a first language. We
does this the other way around, and ask gently if somebody could
translate to English if the have the time. It's much more important to
get the contribution - than do stop the activity by enforcing a to
strict language policy - that could scare people away. The main goal
in Skolelinux is to give people computer languages in their own mother
thong, and sometimes people choose to do it in their own language,
despite of the idea of centralisation that English would give :-)
