Sounds like you are running a pretty large setup. Are you aware of the
default limit of 40 connections per minute for inetd? I believe I have
experienced hitting that roof is not always shown in logs, causing me a
headache with tftp at one point.

Or maybe similar limitations at other non-inetd services like lockd or
other RPC services?
