Actually, performance was not considered when selecting default file
system.  Here are some of the factors I considered:

 - Reliable
 - Included in the default kernel
 - Supported by parted for autopartkit to handle it
 - Journaling, to avoid long fsck times when machines are powered down
   without shutdown
 - Support NFS exporting
 - Support resizing (online of possible, but not vitally important)
