the strategy against failing disks must be backups, and only in 
high-availability scenarios and with serious disk-io one would use raid. 
 
If you have an old fileserver and export the stuff over nfs you have just 
added an additional single point of failiour (fileserver+raid), and a 
performance bottleneck (nfs over fast ethernet, from an *old* server). one 
would be much faster without that box and probatly even more reliable. (c: 
 
So it seems one only looses by importing stuff over nfs in this scenario.
