It's set to remember the LDAP(root) password for a certain amount of
time, thats why you sometimes need the password, other times not.

It also _is_ very easy and nice to use. I use it in all my servers,
even have a Workstation that only have this function.

Opera hasn't been working out-of-the box for a very very long time, that
is about to be changed, should be fixed in pr46, in the meantime you
could install the new one with
apt-get install opera-static
Which are the other KDE programs that doesn't start?
