Re: Handout Skolelinux

Hoi Kurt

Skolelinux prerelease 40: Short summary for a CD cover
created: vr 11.09.2003

[Logo, wallpaper, background picture, bells and whistles ;) ]

Skolelinux is a unique Linux distribution originated with the idea of
providing a complete environment for schools. Thanks to a dedicated
community, mostly in Norway and Germany, it has come a long way.

Skolelinux is a derivative of Debian with some major additions, such as
   a) a comprehensive client-server modell
   b) highly automated installation
   c) a central graphical system administration
?> d) additional software specially for schools

The client-server modell makes Skolelinux unique amoung the Linux
distributions. This model differentiate amoung three flavours called
"profiles".

Main-Server
You must have a "Main-Server" in your LAN which provides a whole lot
of services: file server Samba exporting user data, DHCP server for
your clients, centralized user authentication using LDAP, to mention
a few.

On the "Main-Server" no graphical system (GUI) runs by default. Once
up and running you can do all the administrative tasks from any browser
over the network.

Workstaion
A "Workstation", on the other hand, runs a GUI. Namely XFree84 4.0
and KDE 2.1? As already mentioned the users' authentication and data
are fetched from the "Main-Server".

Thin-Client Server
Another kind of a "Server" is the "Thin-Client Server". Thin-clients
with no storage at all can boot and run from the ressourcen on these
Servers. Generally, Thin-Client Server has a second network card
connecting all its thin clients together.

[ubiquotes diagram here, with clever DTP as background pic?]

If you have a singe machine and want all these features in one,
there is no problem in combining the profiles above in any order.

In case the web-based adminstrative interface is not sufficient for
a special need, the distributions remains Debian. You have all the
advanced packaging facilities of Debian intact.

IMPORTANT
a) The default installation takes over the harddisk partioning for
you. This also means that all the data already in the disks will
be lost!

b) Routing is not a part of this model. For connectivity to the Internet
you must have a gateway, bridge or a router in the network. You simply
give the IP-Adress of the standard gateway during installion.

Skolelinux prerelease 40: Quick installation notes

A. The first machine in the network has to be the Main-Server.

Step 1
------
Clear all your data from the harddisk! Set the BIOS to boot
from CD drive, insert the install CD and boot the computer.

For the default Skolelinux installation just press <Enter> at the
"boot:" prompt.

You will be requested to choose a profile. Depending on your
requirements choose Main-Server, Workstation, Thin-Client Server or
any combination of them. For example, if you want to have a GUI and
work on the Main-Server, add profile Workstation.

Note: The profiles Standalone and Standalone-extra are still
experimental.

The message "Are you sure to partiton automatically?" appears. As
you have backed up all your data, you can say "yes" here.

Step 2
------
The install programm will partiton the disk, format and install the
base packages. The CD will be automatically ejected.

Set the BIOS to boot from harddisk and press <Enter>. The computer
will boot with the base system.

Step 3
------
After successful booting from the harddist, the install script will
continue to install the full package collection. You will be requested
to insert the CD again. This will take some time.

Step 4
------
After copying the packages, auto detection of hardware starts. It is
important that your ethernet card is in the database. Skolelinux does
its own network configuration here, which you can fine tune later.

Step 5 (only for Workstation and Thin-Client Servers)
------
X Windows detection starts. Set your monitor and graphic card properly.

Step 6
------
You must have noticed that we haven't created any normal user in the
box. The idea is that those administration work to be done using the
web based administration tool, a cutomized version of webmin.

Open a browser and request http://localhost:10000 if it runs on the
same machine. Otherwise http://<ip-address>:10000 [without <> of
course].

B. Installing Workstations and Thin-Cleint Servers
Repeat the same steps for each machine.

Probleme die ich hatte:

lange Pause "Configuring interfaces".

cannot be downloaded".

3. Die dritte Maschine ist "zeitgemässer". Compaq EN (small desktop)
1 GHz, 256 MB, rein IDE.

Viel Spass in Guetersloh

It may or may not be worthwhile, but it still has to be done.
