Steven Levy has written two good books,
the first is called Hackers, and in 2010
the 25th anniversary edition was published:
        http://shop.oreilly.com/product/0636920010227.do
The second book is called Crypto,
        and was published in 2001:
        http://www.stevenlevy.com/index.php/books/crypto

Below is Levy's statement of the Hacker Ethic,
        taken from
        http://www.stevenlevy.com/index.php/books/hackers

Access to computers should be unlimited and total.
Always yield to the Hands-On Imperative.
    All information should be free.
    Mistrust authority -- promote decentralization.
Hackers should be judged by their hacking.
You can create art and beauty on a computer.
Computers can change your life for the better."
