What about empty directories?

I really think you need to work off a clone (or a cleaned-up cp -al'ed
copy).  For instance, you do not necessary want to upload the reflog, or
unreachable objects.  The GIT configuration stored inside .git is
probably uninteresting, too.

But it's still a nice idea, I think.
