Perl documentation says:
$! If used numerically, yields the current value of the C "errno"
variable, or in other words, if a system or library call fails,
it sets this variable. This means that the value of $! is
meaningful only immediately after a failure:
I cannot find *any* documentation for '$|'.
A quick test script indicates that &ENOENT does indeed reveal a number,
and that the if statement does the right thing.

Have you ever, ever felt like this?
Had strange things happen? Are you going round the twist?
