I think we have heard all sides of this now (in debian-devel) I conclude that dpkg should deal with an obsolete conffile in the following way. If the conffile has not been locally modified, delete it. If the conffile has been locally modified, ask the user for permission to eliminate the file; if permission is granted then rename the file to *.dpkg-obsolete . Thanks -- Thomas
