the editor file contained /usr/man/man1/editor.1.gz listed as the
fourth line.  That's about it for the excitement.  No idea
why/how/etc.  Bastiann could you forward your
/var/lib/dpkg/alternatives/editor file to Adam?

No clue.  But xemacs is tickling the problem (without even wanting to
set an editor man page link).
