Bug#158973: update-alternatives: resets state to "auto" after preventive removing of non-existent binary

Package: dpkg
Version: 1.10.4
Severity: normal

+ update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/x-terminal-emulator x-terminal-emulator /usr/X11R6/bin/xterm 20 --slave /usr/share/man/man1/x-terminal-emulator.1.gz x-terminal-emulator.1.gz /usr/X11R6/man/man1/xterm.1x.gz
+ update-alternatives --install /usr/bin/x-terminal-emulator x-terminal-emulator /usr/X11R6/bin/uxterm 19 --slave /usr/share/man/man1/x-terminal-emulator.1.gz x-terminal-emulator.1.gz /usr/X11R6/man/man1/uxterm.1x.gz
+ update-alternatives --remove x-terminal-emulator /usr/bin/X11/xterm
Removing manually selected alternative - switching to auto mode

This is non-sense. /usr/bin/X11/xterm does not exist, the hook is only
there to make sure that the old link is removed. update-alternatives
should just ignore that operation and keep the alternatives-entry as-is.
Instead, it sets it to auto, looks completely unreasonably for me.
