Bug#157060: dpkg out of memory errors on 24M ram

While running dselect I'm getting:

I'm currently running a _very_ fresh 3.0r0 installed 12 hours ago from
ftp.fi.debian.org. While installing the system I encountered numerous
similar errors both installing and removing, mostly with gs-common and
defoma-related installations. The installation is on a clean hd, although I
was running 2.2r6 previously. With potato I never had any out of memory
errors, just in case it helps...
The computer in question is a stock IBM Thinkpad 755CE 9545-cnx with
540M/24M and a 3com589-tp. Swap is configured as ~19M.
