Bug#157060: dpkg out of memory errors on 24M ram

Package: dpkg
Version: 1.9.21

While running dselect I'm getting:

running dpkg --pending --remove ...
(Reading database ... 17118 files and directories currently installed.)
Removing xserver-xfree86 ...
Out of memory!
dpkg: error processing xserver-xfree86 (--remove):
subprocess pre-removal script returned error exit status 1
Out of memory!
Attempt to free ureferenced scalar, <DEBCONF_CONFIG> chunk 4.
dpkg: error while cleaning up:
subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status 1
Errors were encountered while processing:

dpkg --remove returned error exit status 1
press <enter> to continue

I'm currently running a _very_ fresh 3.0r0 installed 12 hours ago from
ftp.fi.debian.org. While installing the system I encountered numerous
similar errors both installing and removing, mostly with gs-common and
defoma-related installations. The installation is on a clean hd, although I
was running 2.2r6 previously. With potato I never had any out of memory
errors, just in case it helps...

The computer in question is a stock IBM Thinkpad 755CE 9545-cnx with
540M/24M and a 3com589-tp. Swap is configured as ~19M.
