I'm not sure if your patch fixes this, but I've noticed the a problem:

[sroot@oof:/root]# setenv LD_PRELOAD /usr/lib/libefence.so
[sroot@oof:/root]# dpkg -l

  Electric Fence 2.1 Copyright (C) 1987-1998 Bruce Perens.
Segmentation fault

...You may want to check over there if dpkg is compiled with your patches
and is electric-fence is available.
