Package: dpkg
Version: 1.9.18
Severity: important

Architecture: i386
Pre-Depends:
	libc6 (>=3D 2.2.4-4), libncurses5 (>=3D 5.2.20010310-1),
	libstdc++2.10-glibc2.2 (>=3D 1:2.95.4-0.010810)

I've installed a fresh `woody' release (images:2002/1/3) onto a empty
system. To change the default editor from vi(m) to xemacs, I've tried to
use update-alternatives. But this tool have a bug. It tries to work with
the manpath /usr/man instead of /usr/share/man. This bug makes it
impossible for all other tools to work with alternatives! dselect for
example can't replace emacs with xemacs.

update-alternatives only uses the paths it is told to use. If you change
the alternative to emacs using update-alternatives --config and things
break that means your emacs package setup its alternatives incorrectly.

Please check which package adds the broken alternatives (using
update-alternatives --display) and file a bugreport on that package.

Wichert.
