New install - Debian::DebConf::Question error in upgrade

Hello,

Hopefully this will be a simple problem, and hopefully this is the
appropriate list. If there is a more appropriate list please redirect me.

I just installed Debian 2.2 R0 on my spanking new system. I attempted to
"upgrade" to woody as I need the stage2 XFree86 4.0 to support my video
card. During the upgrade cycle something broke. I now get the following
message when trying to install/upgrade any packages:

Can't locate object method "value" via package "Debian::DebConf::Question"
at /usr/lib/perl5/DebConf/Config.pm line 31.

I have debconf_0.2.80.16_all.deb installed, and I tried installing
debconf_0.4.02_i386.deb. I know a little Perl, to say the least, and it
looks like the method for answering questions (dialog, non-interactive, tty,
etc) is not set properly. However, I can't find out how to fix this or what
the appropriate setting would be (or where to set it).

Any help would be appreciated. I CAN reinstall from scratch, but a quicker
fix would be appreciated if it is a simple problem. As I'm somewhat
experienced in Linux (first version was 0.96 or 0.98 - hey it was a while
ago), Debian (I've installed several distribution versions in the past), and
Perl (I've been using it for years), I'd be perfectly willing to work with
anyone and do some diagnostics to find out where the problem is. However,
if I can't resolve it in a timely manner (say Sunday at noon (EST)) I'll
probably opt to reinstall the whole thing again.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Fred Reimer
