I think that your problem is different. It's the big locale problem that
dpkg has. When dpkg want to translate the error message 'Cannot remove
directory' (or something similar) it cores dump.

Please try it with dpkg 1.4.0.35, the problem shouldn't happen.
Alternatively you can use LC_ALL=C when you're using dpkg.
